Photographs of courthouses and courtrooms from around the country, selected for their variety of designs and arrangements, and representing a range of construction dates. This section is being redesigned and expanded to present more examples of courthouse design drawn from more then forty years of visiting and assessing courthouses nationwide.

Courtroom, Morris County Courthouse, Morristown, New Jersey

The 1827 MORRIS COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, COURTHOUSE contains this one courtroom, although a large court complex has since grown up about it. The symmetry and balanced look of the space is dramatic, with the judicial area set off by a rail on three sides and the jury box outside the rail on one side, opposite additional public seating on the other. The "pool cue rack" on the far side contains staffs for the tipstaff, a predecessor of the bailiff. The large courtroom has a small balcony and is essentially monochromatic, decorated with a circular plaster ceiling-frieze.
